Pre Trip Planning

I want to focus on the subject of packing in this blog. I need to figure out what I want to take on the trip and how I can get all my stuff into my bag without going over the 50lb weight limit. Packing was much easier when the limit was 70 pounds. Now with a smaller limit, I am thinking about using a different case.

I generally use the Storm Case 2950 which is a great case. I do like the fact that my gear, well to me, seems more secure being in a hard box. The downside to the hard box, though, is the weight. With a 50 pound limit, using a 20 pound box really does not make much sense. This is why I have decided to use the new Aqua Lung 1550 bag. It's much lighter which gives me an additional 10 lbs of packing room. This means I can keep most of my scuba things in one bag instead of having divided up between different bags (including may carry-on bag). This saves me from carrying my usual heavy carry-on around the airport and I am all for that!

I will still use the Storm Case for my camera system. These items are more likely to break if smashed by other bags. So this means I will have one box for my photo equipment, one bag for my scuba gear and maybe some clothes, my carry-on to handle my dive computers, camera, and the rest of my clothes, and my "personal bag" on the plane would be my computer carrying case. I plan on bringing my computer with me so that I am able to copy my pictures, write my dive logs, and now record my travel experiences which I plan to share with you all.

I am looking forward to this trip. Even though I have been to Palau and Yap before, this excursion will be my first time using NECO Marine as our dive charter. Previous trips I have used Fish-n-Fins which is a great company. I will be staying at the Palau Pacific Resort as I have in the past. Using a new dive shop allows me to broaden my experience and make comparisons so that I will be able to offer more options to people who will be traveling to Palau. As for Manta Ray Bay Hotel in Yap, the last time I was there they were still rebuilding from a typhoon from several years back. Now they are done and the pictures on their website look great. I am really looking forward to being there. I do remember the food was fantastic.

The other thing I am looking forward to is meeting new people. There are 6 other people from dive shops on this trip, and Mike and Vikki from Caradonna Dive Adventures makes the count 8. There is Mark and Linda Sue from Family Scuba Center in Midland, Texas; Lee and Kevin from Aqua-Dive Academy in Portland, Maine; Amber from B & W Dive Co. in Channelview, Texas; and James from Sub-Aquatic Sports & Services in Battle Creek, Michigan. When meeting other dive enthusiasts, I do enjoy learning how and where they do their local diving, and sometimes I even pick up some ideas to improve The Dive Shack.
